HOW TO PRESENT A VISUAL DOCUMENT:

Example of a painting by Jean leon Gerome FERRIS entitled "The First Thanksgiving"

A- INTRODUCTION

1. Nature

This document is a painting

2. Title

It is entitled "The First Thanksgiving"

3. Author

It was painted by Jean Leon Gerome FERRIS. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in eighteen sixty-three (1863) and died in nineteen thirty (1930).

4. Date

It was painted in 1899.

5. Source

(Nothing here!)

6. Context and general subject

This painting was selected as the "picture of the day" for November 24, 2005.
As its title suggests, the painting is a representation of the first thanksgiving which was celebrated by:
-  the first English colonists / settlers who arrived on the American continent on the one hand
- and on the other hand the Wampanoag Indians who helped them settle down in the wilderness.

Most of the setllers were Protestant separatists who had fled (to flee / fled / fled = fuir) religious persecution in England or were looking for better living conditions in the New World.
In 1620, they embarked on a ship called the Mayflower and arrived 66 days later on the Massachussets Bay to establish a colony at Plymouth. That's why those colonists were later called the Pilgrim Fathers.

B- DEVELOPMENT

1. Description of the elements

- In the foreground, I can see a large group of White English colonists / settlers assembled near their house, and some Indians. Apparently they are sharing a meal together;
- In the background we can see the sea, it's probably the Atlantic Ocean where they travelled from England to The New World / the American continent on a ship called the Mayflower.
- On the right, there is a large table with plates, dishes, pots of drink and food.
- The general atmosphere is rather merry / gay / lighthearted and friendly, it is a time of sharing in peace and harmony.

2. Position of the characters and interpretation

As I can see, most of the English people are standing. It is a position of readiness because they need to be at ease to move about and greet the Indians whom they have invited.
On the contrary, the Indians are sitting in front of them, on the left.
It may be their habit, but it also shows that they are not afraid or scared, just a little impressed maybe. They have come as friends and are ready to receive the English people's invitation and gratitude.
According to the historical reports, those Indians belonged to the Wampanoag tribe and were aware of the needs of the new comers when they arrived on their land. They brought with them one Indian in particular, called Squanto (a member of the Pawtuxet tribe) who helped them after the hardship of their first winter to settle down by showing them how to fish, hunt, grow plants (especially corn) and avoid poisonous plants in the wilderness.
The first successful harvest of the colonists gave them the opportunity to organize a celebratory feast with the Indians which lasted three days.

C- CONCLUSION: Meaning of the painting + My reaction

This painting shows a pleasant atmosphere between the two communities. It was painted to give a positive image of this first encounter, from the point of view of the settlers.
Unfortunately, the future will show how those relationships will deteriorate and turn to mistrust, antagonism and harsh wars. Today this feast is still celebrated in America on the fourth Thursday of November, but many Indians refuse to consider that time as a joyous moment owing to the dark days that followed for their people.
I like this painting because the colours are rather bright and it shows a certain harmony. It's an idyllic picture of the past but it can also be taken as a  hopeful representation of how we would like the wold to be, with peaceful relationships between all the communities.
